Motion Amplification using Iris M Enhancing Vision Technology
Technical Associates is a Certified Service Provider of RDI’s Patented Motion Amplification using their Iris M Kit. This technology measures deflection, displacement, movement and vibration not visible to the human eye. They utilize high definition video camera technology in conjunction with their specially developed software and processing algorithms to extract meaningful data. This technology turns millions of pixels in the camera’s view into a sensor capable of measuring vibration or motion with high levels of accuracy.
The results lend themselves to a visualization of the motion. Using this invaluable tool, we can measure and quantify any structural assets that the camera can see. Motion Amplification is a proprietary video processing algorithm that detects subtle motion, then amplifies that motion to a level visible to the naked eye, which enhances the understanding of the components and interrelationships creating the motion.
Common problems detectable using Motion Amplification include (but are not limited to the following):
- Misalignment/Coupling Problems
- Soft or Sprung Support Feet
- Inadequate Structure to Support the Loads Imposed upon it When Running at Various Speeds
- Excessive Flexure of Attached Piping or Ductwork
- Potential Resonance Conditions (where Forcing Frequencies Coincide with or Approach Natural Frequencies)
Although the Iris M System directly measures Vibration Displacement, post processing can be used to show the results in time waveforms and spectra with units of Velocity. In addition, you can either look at the motion of all frequencies up to the maximum frequency of the time waveform – or you can use proprietary filtering capabilities that allows specific frequencies to be animated (1X RPM, 2X RPM, Blade Pass Frequency, etc.).
And, it does not require several hours of building models to animate them (the pixels of the camera “build” the model). Often, measurements can be made and interpreted within a relatively short period of time that can lead directly to Solutions of a wide range of problems that might be present within a rotating machine and/or support structures.
Technical Associates is one the leading Certified Motion Amplification Technology Users who can come to your plant, apply this potent analysis tool and help you visualize a host of problems that might otherwise go undetected.
